LNG Terminal Operator
“We have found our membership of SIGTTO invaluable as we develop our service portfolio. The sharing of experiences and industry best practices amongst the world’s gas tanker and terminal operators enhances not only our participation in the other LNG-related international organisations with which we are involved but also the likelihood of positive, unified outcomes."
This framework has become critical for the future of the gas sector, as one of the main issues lies in maximising its capacity by developing increasingly sustainable logistical solutions, both technically and economically, capable of guaranteeing that both short-medium natural gas and medium-long-term renewable gases guarantee compliance with decarbonisation objectives on the 2050 horizon at the lowest possible abatement cost.
Enagás is the leading natural gas transmission company and Technical Manager of the Spanish gas system. With more than 50 years of experience, it is certified as an independent TSO by the European Union and is present in eight countries. Owning more than 12,000 km of gas pipelines and three strategic storage sites. To date, Enagás has 6 LNG terminals in the Mediterranean, Cantabrian and Atlantic regions.
The Spanish gas system is the most mature, capable and logistically flexible within Europe, with 7 regasification plants, of which Enagás owns fully or partly 6 of them. In addition to the largest regasification and LNG storage capacity in Europe, it has the most innovative track record in terms of logistics developments from the LNG terminals, from the first tanker loading (Barcelona in 70s), to the first pipe or terminal to ship (PtS) operation (Cartagena in 2017), to the first loading of a ship (Huelva in 1997), or the first transhipment (Cartagena in 2005).
As of 2012, Enagás began a process of integral transformation of its LNG infrastructures, with a focus on maximising their logistical compatibility and thus enabling the virtualisation of their capacity, increasing their scope of competence. Puertos del Estado (Spanish State Ports) commit also to this initiative promoting together the development of CORE LNGas hive project co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility. A project that, with the focus on the introduction of LNG in Spanish ports, has managed to transfer the centre of gravity of LNG bunkering to Spain and to propose a competitive scenario for the sector that will show how, through the development of alternative logistics, small-scale methane tankers, it is possible to meet the emerging demand for bunkering without the need to develop fixed infrastructures over a period of up to 15 years.
This Project also provides the sector with a complete "User's Manual" for the implementation of LNG as an alternative fuel in the port environment, by developing solutions for each and every one of the stages of its "life cycle": promotion, demand analysis, development of the supply chain, implementation on the ship, training for handling and use.
According to its objective for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, Enagás also promotes projects aimed at contributing to the decarbonisation process and supports the development of initiatives in the field of renewable gases (green hydrogen, biogas and biomethane).
“We have found our membership of SIGTTO invaluable as we develop our service portfolio,” mentions Mr. de la Flor Enagás Director of International Organisations. “The sharing of experiences and industry best practices amongst the world’s gas tanker and terminal operators enhances not only our participation in the other LNG-related international organisations with which we are involved but also the likelihood of positive, unified outcomes."
“Going forward, Enagás, SIGTTO and the gas shipping and terminal industry in general face some intriguing challenges, not least achieving the ambitious decarbonisation and climate change targets that have been set,” concludes Mr de la Flor. “The industry needs to work in harmony to achieve these goals, and LNG has a unique role to play as a fuel in the maritime sector. Our industry also has an important part to play in the transition towards a renewable future, as we help facilitate the development of gas renewables such as hydrogen, biogas and bio LNG and their associated logistics chains.”
“The decarbonisation of our economy requires a flexible, competitive and environmentally neutral natural gas stream, and LNG shipping, which has demonstrated for years its resilience and operational excellence, is the tool through which we can adapt the capacity of the gas system to the new requirements of a demand that is as variable in volume as it is in location. In this scenario, the natural gas stream must work as a single team focused on providing value to our society and for Enagás, SIGTTO is a magnificent meeting point where experiences and knowledge complement each other to build a safer and more sustainable future”, stated Claudio Rodriguez, Enagás Gas Assets General Manager.
Fernando Impuesto, Enagás Entrepreneurship General Manager and Coordinator of CORE LNGas hive project and its follow up LNGhive2 shares that “the promotion and development of LNG bunkering as real and sustainable alternative for marine transportation requires of the cooperation of the different stakeholders, in SIGTTO we have found a perfect collaborator for LNGhive2 project”
